This is a terrible time of the year to try to get either Blue-winged or Golden-winged Warbler. Both should have young by now. From doing Breeding Bird Atlas I learned that Blue-wings become silent by early July. The adults may be actively feeding fledged young or have begun molt before Fall migration. On June 16 and 17 Marshall Ilfiff, Matt Hafner and I birded Garrett County. We had a difficult time finding Golden-wing at know breeding sites. The few we found came into imitation of Screech Owl. On July 1 we missed Golden-wing entirely. Many Neotropical Migrants are well into or have completed nesting. Now is when they go through a complete molt and are more vulnerable to predation because of impaired flight. In a few weeks the first southbound warblers will be passing through. Good Birding!
