Eight diligent counters, divided into thr= ee teams scoured the refuge, coming up with a respectable 101 species-- shor= t of last year's impressive 112 species, but nevertheless a nice showing. = I suspect the early May heat pushed out the White-throats, and other birds = we might normally see. A total of 19 warbler species were tallied. Highlights (including birds not usually seen at the refuge this time of year, or else birds of general interest): Pied-billed Grebe 2 DC Cormorant 2 (overhead) Am. Black Duck 1 Hooded Merganser 1 Osprey 1 N. HARRIER 1 Wild Turkey 8 Am. Coot 1 YB Cuckoo 9 Barred Owl 3 (two during day) CHUCK-WILL'S WIDOW 1 Whip-poor-will 18 (one during day) Red-eyed Vireo 109 (most abundant species) Veery 2 Swainson's Thrush 7 Blk-thr. Blue Warbler 4 Blk-thr. Green Warbler 4 BLACKBURNIAN WARB. 2 (not gotten last year) Blackpoll Warbler 25 Cerulean Warbler 1 Prothonotary Warbler 11 (most in non-public areas) Worm-eater 2 Ovenbird 68 (most abundant warbler) La. Warterthrush 1 (a very low #) Ky.
