Did some county bee-bopping today. Started out in St Marys County, zoomed thru Calvert and Anne Arundel, and made my first pitstop at Woodstock on the Howard County side, then on to Carroll County, Liberty Reservoir (arm that intersects with Rt 32, then I zipped over to Little Bennett Regional Park in Montgomery, hiked to the top of Sugarloaf Mtn in Frederick, and finished the day at Lily Pons (also in Frederick County). Nothing noteworthy in the morning and generally slow. Only 89 species on the day, but surprisingly, ended up with 18 sp. of warblers. Best birds were the shorebirds at Lily Pons and the Dickcissel. Shorebirds from the bridge (on the visitor center side) included 10 Least Sandpipers, 6 Semipalmated Sandpipers, 2 Semipalmated Plovers, 1 Spotted Sandpiper, 2 Pectoral Sandpipers, and 1 White-rumped Sandpiper (all in the flats in the nearest impoundment). The Dickcissel passed over Lily Pons Rd a couple times, but seems to return to the green weedy field on the north side of Lily Pons Rd, just east of the intersection with New Design Rd. It was a male and was *not* calling. While the view from the top of Sugarloaf was wonderful (except for the haze), the amount of time and effort to climb to the summit was hardly worth the 3 calling Yellow-billed Cuckoos. Still, I'd have wondered had I not made the trek... Well...330+ miles today and I managed to close out my third bird for the year......Canada Goose. Hooray. Yippee. Now I'm looking forward to my 4 hrs of sleep before May Count (I'm such a greedy wimp--I want my sleep and my birds, too!). Maybe I'll catch up on some sleep the first week of July...or not. a birding bum-surfers don't know what they're missing!
